How Vital Is Powering the Next Generation of Rail Talent

In partnership with Network Rail and training provider Intertrain, Vital has taken a proactive approach to tackling the national rail skills shortage through an innovative apprenticeship scheme designed to generate long-term social value.

Overview

Recognising the growing demand for skilled professionals within rail, Vital identified an opportunity to create structured, sustainable career pathways. The 12-month Rail Trainee Technician Programme provides training across multiple disciplines, including Track Maintenance & Renewals, Overhead Line, Signalling & Telecoms, and Power & Distribution – equipping participants with both technical expertise and real-world experience.

Approach

The programme blends classroom learning with practical, on-site experience to give apprentices a holistic, hands-on education. From changing sleepers and performing routine maintenance to working on overhead lines and power systems, every aspect of the course is designed to prepare trainees for success within the rail industry.

Beyond technical ability, the scheme focuses on personal growth, health and wellbeing, ensuring each individual develops the confidence, resilience, and understanding required to build a sustainable career.

Upon completion, participants achieve:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering
  • Level 2 Certificate in Underpinning Knowledge
  • Essential Skills, Personal Learning, and Thinking Skills
  • Awareness of Employment Rights and Responsibilities

Impact & Outcome

The 2024 cohort includes 10 apprentices, representing diverse backgrounds and regions across the UK. Many have already progressed to interview stage with Network Rail’s Signalling and Telecoms division, with others receiving job offers within Vital’s own rail teams.

By creating accessible entry points into engineering, Vital’s initiative helps bridge the UK’s rail skills gap, boost employment, and drive social mobility.

Three of the current apprentices have already secured post-programme interviews with Vital’s Signal & Telecoms division – a tangible example of the programme’s success in turning learning into opportunity.

This partnership stands as a blueprint for social value in action – combining education, employment, and equality to deliver meaningful change.

By giving individuals from all walks of life the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications and industry experience, Vital is shaping a workforce capable of keeping Britain’s railways running safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
