Transmission Training Working Group

To address a talent shortage and the need for upskilling in the energy sector we’ve collaborated with key industry partners like Balfour Beatty, Siemens, and National Grid, to develop a regionally-based training scheme that delivers industry-standard certification while benefiting local communities.

Context

Faced with a critical skills shortage in the UK’s energy transmission sector, the industry needed a solution that could simultaneously attract new entrants, upskill existing workers, and strengthen local capability.

The Challenge

With major infrastructure projects ramping up across the UK, the energy sector faced an acute shortage of skilled professionals.

  • Limited pipeline of new entrants into transmission roles

  • Growing need to upskill existing workforces

  • Increasing pressure to deliver on ambitious national grid projects

These challenges demanded a unified response – one that combined industry collaboration with practical, on-the-ground training.

Our Solution

Morson Vital launched the Transmission Training Working Group – a first-of-its-kind, regionally based initiative designed to train and qualify the next generation of transmission specialists.

Working collaboratively with Balfour Beatty, Siemens, Scottish Power, SSE, National Grid, GE, Hitachi, Burns & McDonnell and other key partners, we created a framework that aligns directly with EU Skills Level 3 accreditation, ensuring participants gain verified, industry-standard certification.

Through the Working Group, Morson Vital:

  • Supported training specialists such as 3GT

  • Worked with clients and providers to secure plant, equipment, and facilities for hands-on learning

  • Created a collaborative specialist training, based regionally, adding value back into local communities and reducing costs

The results

  • Industry-standard certification delivered, accredited by EU Skills at Level 3

  • A truly collaborative model uniting contractors, suppliers, and clients

  • Community benefit through localised delivery and investment in regional economies

By combining training, collaboration, and community value, Morson Vital helped create a sustainable workforce pipeline that meets both today’s and tomorrow’s transmission challenges.
