Keeping Anglia Moving – Safely

Vital supports Network Rail’s Vigilant Presence and Strategic Security Strategies across the Anglia route – delivering visible patrols, rapid response, and intelligence-led prevention to keep the railway safe, reduce trespass, and save lives. Through proactive engagement and data-driven insight, we’re building safer, more resilient communities along one of the UK’s busiest transport corridors.

Context

Network Rail appointed Vital to strengthen the safety and security of its Anglia route, an area experiencing increased incidents of trespass, vandalism, and cable theft.

Our role was to deploy specialist teams capable of reducing risk to the public, improving operational reliability, and supporting suicide prevention initiatives in collaboration with local partners.

Backed by a proven record of delivery, Vital continues to play a key role in supporting Network Rail’s goal of zero harm across its national network.

The Challenge

The Anglia route faced:

  • A rise in unauthorised access impacting passenger and freight services.

  • Growing concerns around suicide prevention and community safety.

  • The need for a visible deterrent to reduce repeat incidents.

  • A requirement for real-time intelligence to direct resources effectively.

Network Rail needed a partner capable of combining human presence, technological vigilance, and analytical insight to create a sustainable, preventive security model.

Our Solution

Vital deployed mobile patrol teams across high-risk locations to deliver continuous visibility and rapid intervention.

Our approach included:

  • High-visibility patrols deterring trespass, theft, and vandalism.

  • Rapid response to incidents involving vulnerable individuals, ensuring immediate safety until specialist teams arrived.

  • Fault and risk reporting, with over 500 infrastructure issues logged and escalated.

  • Evidence gathering via body-worn and covert cameras to support law enforcement and future deterrence.

  • Community engagement, including mental health awareness events such as Brew Monday to foster open conversation and prevent suicide attempts.

Every patrol report is logged digitally, providing Network Rail with live visibility of incidents, trends, and intervention outcomes.

Results & Outcomes

Since project launch, Vital has delivered measurable improvements in safety and performance across the Anglia network:

  • 190+ patrols delivered

  • 60+ close calls attended

  • 500+ incidents and faults identified and reported

Impact:

  • Noticeable reduction in cable theft and trespass at identified high-risk locations.

  • Improved coordination between security, maintenance, and mental health partners.

  • Enhanced community safety and staff wellbeing through proactive engagement.

  • Increased operational resilience through faster response times and data-led deployments.

Vital’s sustained presence and intelligence-sharing model have helped reduce disruption, prevent harm, and protect lives across the Anglia route.
