Since 2009 we’ve served as a tier-one supplier of contingent labour to Network Rail. The moment came when Network Rail reduced its preferred supplier list from 125 to just four in 2015 – and Vital was one of the four chosen. It’s a recognition of our commitment to safety, delivery and continuous improvement.

How we made it work.

From Foundation to Framework.

When Vital first stepped in with Network Rail, providing contingent labour across frontline roles, safety performance was a key differentiator. Over the years, our safety-first culture became central to how we delivered across track labour, safety-critical grades and semi-professional roles.

By the time Network Rail cut its supplier list to four in 2015, our consistent safety record and operational performance made the difference.

How we made it work: Culture. Control. Continuity.

  • We embedded a safety-first mindset across our entire supply chain – from our internal operations to how we managed contractors and shifts on live rail environments. 
  • We established transparent reporting, audit trails and performance monitoring for all labour suppliers, improving visibility for Network Rail and their safety teams. 
  • We committed to continual improvement: identifying training gaps, improving contractor behaviour, reducing risk through structured safety interventions. 
  • We aligned our labour supply strategies with Network Rail’s safety expectations and frameworks, enabling us to respond fast and reliably in a live, high-hazard environment.

From 125 suppliers to four.
